Letters to my children- May 2015

This is another installment in a series of blog posts focusing on writing letters to my children. I'm fortunate to be participating in this project along with a very talented group of women photographers who enjoy capturing the every day moments spent with our children through our camera lenses.  I hope you enjoy this post!  Follow around the circle to see more from the other members of the circle!

Cooper,

This month has been all about moving for you.  You can't get enough of riding your bike and scooter.  You and Daddy have been working on riding your bike without training wheels and you've really gotten it down.  The only thing holding you back is that you are nervous about being able to stop on your own.  It won't be long!  In the meantime, you've taken up a new love for your scooter.  It is so much fun watching you!  Your smile is just contagious when you go riding by.  On a recent trip to Target, just the two of us, you went gliding by on the grocery cart with the biggest grin on your face.  I have to admit that you had me laughing and having such a great time along with you!  I snapped this picture of you as you went by and it is easily one of my favorite shots of all time--it takes me right back to you and I laughing in the store together.  Oh, how you make me laugh :)  I never want to forget the sound of your giggles!  I'm so glad I get to be your mom!

I love you!
Mom

My Sweet Sarah,

You grow more beautiful, inside and out, every single day.  I love your free spirit and determination.  I love that you know who you are and that you stand up for what you believe in.  You are kind and caring to everyone and everything around you.  Recently, the mom of one of the other girls in your class took me aside and told me something that made me so proud of you.  Earlier in the school year, you began telling me that you were worried about a boy in your class--he was having a hard time doing what the other kids were doing and several kids were picking on him.  We talked about it and I encouraged you to be extra kind and try to help him when you could.  But that was only the beginning for you.  God gave you an extra special heart, Sarah.  He's already using you to make a difference in this world.  You didn't just try to be kind to this boy, you became his friend.  You sat with him at lunch when no one else did.  Even when other kids made fun of you for it.  You defended him when others were picking on him, and you encouraged others to do the same.  So much so, that this mom wanted me to know that you had caused her daughter and others in the class to do the same through your example.  I'm in awe of your bravery. You are making a difference in the world.

Love,
Mom

Letters to my children- April 2015

This is another installment in a series of blog posts focusing on writing letters to my children. Cooper,
This month we went for your five-year old check-up.  It’s amazing to me how big you are getting.  You just seem so much more grown up now. You were so confident through the entire visit with the nurse and the doctor.  It was a different experience with you because you were so independent.  You still wanted me nearby, but you were determined to do it all yourself.  It gave me a chance to stand back and take it all in.  My favorite moment came when you were going through the vision test.  You were so sure of yourself as you identified each of the pictures on the chart, and when you came to the picture of the mug you called out “tea!”  It gave me a big smile and warmed my heart.  Drinking hot tea is something you have liked since you were very little.  In fact, you like drinking iced tea too as long as it is what I’m drinking.  It’s something we share together, with you always sneaking a sip from my cup, and it fills my heart with joy to see your sneaky grin when I catch you in the act.  It's moments like these that I'm reminded just how much the little things matter to you.  I'm reminded of all of the nights you've asked to have "mom's hot tea" (otherwise known as ginger peach tea) with your dinner.  It makes it all worth it.  I want to remember these tiny details that make up our daily lives together.  You are such a blessing to me--I'm grateful for you every single day.  And I have so much fun being your mom.  I love you sweet boy!

Sarah,
This has been a month full of fun surprises!  Last week, you tried to bring a baby turtle home from school in your lunch box.  Your clever plan was thwarted when another student in your class told the teacher and she released your little friend back outside.  Your voice was full of excitement when you called to fill me in on the whole adventure.  This is the second turtle you have rescued this week—with the first being the baby you found swimming around in the pool skimmer on Easter. You immediately scooped him up, carried him around, and made him a home in a bucket that was filled with rocks, plants and a place for swimming.  There is no denying you have a special gift when it comes to animals.  Just a week earlier, you discovered 5 or 6 lizards hiding out in the backyard.  They spent the next hour warming themselves on my hand while you sketched out their portraits in your art journal.  I love watching you—it reminds me of the times your grandpa rescued turtles from the side of the road and brought them home to me in a big cardboard box.  And how I loved going to the stock show with my class each year because I knew they would be selling chameleons that I would buy and bring home.  You are so much like I was when I was your age.  I enjoy our time together so very much.  I love you sweet girl.

Letters to my children- March 2015

This is the second installment of a new blog circle I'm participating in this year called “letters to my children”.  I’m excited to be participating in this project with a group of very talented photographers who come together in celebration of our shared passion for capturing the beauty of every day life with our children through photos and words.  This month I'm focusing on my daughter Sarah.  Hope you enjoy the post.  Follow the link at the bottom of the page to continue to the next blog in our circle.

Sweet Sarah,

I love the way you see the world.  You see beauty and promise in everything around you.  And you are never more a home than when you are outside exploring.  You see value in all of creatures, even those that the rest of us run from.  On our recent camping trip, several wasps were lingering around the porch as we were heading in from roasting marshmallows over the fire.  You came to me in tears because you were worried they were going be squashed when "all they were doing was looking for something sweet to eat."  When mosquito hawks end up in the house, you treat them as a treasure that you capture and hold carefully and then release back outside.  You often capture and study lizards and other creatures in the yard.  You are a collector of sea shells and rocks.  And you love to search for and plant new specimens in your corner of the garden.  You are a fearless explorer and you are always up for an adventure.  I love that you are so confident and that you are not afraid to try and experience new things.  You reach for the stars and dream without boundaries.  I'm so blessed to get to come along with you as you spread your wings and find your own path.  You are destined for great things sweet girl.  I'm so lucky to be your mom.

Loving you always,

Mom
